An illustrated article exploring the question;
'The move from physical to digital products within the music industry has previously reduced the srtong relationship between visual media and music.'

To begin, I began to explore product design and how designs are implied on physical objects. This was an exercise to explore the vinyl as a canvas as often, the surface isn't simply black anymore but can come in a wide colour spectrum and sometimes even have illustrations or images on the exterior.

This print workshop explored stenciling, mono prints and marbling, all of which involved working with ink. The pros of this medium is every print is unique, there is a sense of achievement when a print is produced due to how unpredictable the ink can be and the grain created by the ink bleeding adds a nostalgic theme to the image which relates to the direction of my project.

Workshop with guest lecturer Maria Midtunn where the basics of making a zine was explored. I created mine relating to my music brief where a quick outlay of illustrations were produced giving a step by step guide of how to use vinyls. The outcome isn't clean enough to be used as a professional zine however it was a good exercise in practicing putting a booklet together and creating a story in limited time.
Zine Workshop

Sinatra Cartoons \\ Bowie Strip
Inspired by retro cartoons such as those by Charles M Schulz, the trace workshop allowed a base to create an image with my own personal style to it. After depicting the outline and features, the key is to stick to limited colour palette and flat fill to create a clean, cartoon effect. I went of to make my own versions of Sinatra and then experimented with making a comic strip featuring Bowie and found the style, sketchy lines & a pop of colour to be one I wanted to take further.

Illustrations
Taking a break from the Wacom, the following illustrations (Left) were made using brush and ink, the downfall with this medium however is my unsteady hand and blotchiness that occurs due to this so taking this as inspiration, the latter covers were made digitally sketching so they still held my personal style but produced a cleaner, sharper image. The palettes were kept simple and the black outlines were filled with flat colour to bring the illustrations to life.

Vinyls

Zine Illustrations
Continuing with the same stylisation as the previous vinyl covers illustrations, I created depictions of vinyls (to portray the physical products mentioned in my article) and then I wanted to involve editorials of people actually experiencing music related scenarios such as looking through a collection of records or dancing with a sweetheart rather than having earphones in and being unsocialable. The aim of these images is to illustrate the article in a decorative style, keeping within the same theme with the same palettes, scale and minimalism.

Final Publication
My final zine is a mix of my essay and an article paired with decorative editorials to illustrate the text. I choose the palette of pink and grey after sampling paper and colours, not only are these colours relevant in contemporary design but also worked best for a base for my images. The design was kept simple such as typography for the title and back covers, this was inspired by modern illustrative magazines where type is just as present as the art. The zine is staple bound to create a clean finish and is 14 pages start to finish to allow a clear layout. Overall, this was an enjoyable project exploring the relationship between text and image and how illustration can be used as a communication tool.
