Editorials

This weeks project is editorials. The brief is sent at 5pm featuring a article to illustrate and we have a 24hr deadline to create and send back the finished piece to then continue with a new assignment. Here are my editorial responses.

The article behind this brief was gender sterotyping of kids toys and how it affects them later in life. Due to the theme being 'Decorative' I needed to create an illustration that was mainly just about the aesthetics rather than trying to portray an opinion or underlying message. The piece highlights certain topics in the article with the main concept being putting an image to words. Seeing as they are discussing toys and sterotypes, I chose to use this as my inspiration, influencing the colour palette and imagery used.

Final Design

This brief explores the theory that the Universe is just one big simulation and we're all just part of a larger game, like Sims. My initial idea was to visually represent Earth as part of a game of Sims, clearly showing the computer, space and controls. I experimented with the concept of puppetry but thought that concept would be getting too in depth so funnily enough, my final design ended up being a more refined version of my original idea, I just cleaned up the vectors and colour palette to come to my final outcome.

Final Editorial
The final brief of the week was on an article named 'Abundance without Attachment' which was about people's relationship with money and how it affects their lives. Seeing as the topic highlights materialism and the author taking the side of how we choose wealth over experience, I set about making my illustration represent being a slave to the system, exploring how being wealthy doesn't make you happy. There were certain requirements to be fufilled such as a monotone, landscape 20x15 image and that's why the final image was stripped of the colour. I like to keep my images simple and to the point but as this brief was a 'Critical' illustration, my opinion is also expressed being you could have a mountain of money but that's not all there is to life.
This week has been a great start into the introduction of editorials with having to create and send off an illustration in a deadline of 24 hrs and trying to figure out the best way to sell an idea in this time. Instinct played a huge part as often my first idea would be the final idea even when I explored inbetween. It's good to experiment with time management and see what you can achieve in a short window of time.
